Folk calendar

Konon Ogorodnik

On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates the martyr Konon Gradar.

On the day of Konon in Rus', it was customary to soak vegetable seeds for subsequent planting. Also from this date it was necessary to start digging the garden and fertilizing the beds.

It is interesting that the garden on Konon was supposed to be cultivated even in bad weather. It is not for nothing that this saint was also called the Sufferer. The peasants taught their children: “Even if it’s winter on Konon Gradar’s day, start plowing the garden. Just plow on this day – the garden will certainly be good, and there will be plenty of vegetables.”

There were also special signs for the weather. It was believed that if the weather on Konon is sunny, then in the summer there is no need to be afraid of hail. From that day on, morning performances—spring frosts that happen before sunrise—became easier. According to popular belief, after Konon there are always forty of them.
