Strong duel for a place in the “quarters” of the Champions League
After a balanced match in the first leg on St. James' Park, qualification for the 'quarters' will be decided tonight. In the tour in England, both goals came at the end of the duel. “Coțofenele” opened the scoring in the 86th minute through the success of Harvey Barnes, and the Catalans equalized in the 90th+6th minute, thanks to the goal scored by Lamine Yamal from a penalty kick.
This weekend, both teams managed domestic victories. Barcelona beat Sevilla 5-2 on aggregate in La Liga, while Newcastle won 1-0 in the Premier League at Cheslea.
The coaches of the two teams prefaced tonight's duel.
They press high, are very quick and defend well. It will be a difficult match, very physical. We will have to be close to perfection.
The team is highly motivated. The Champions League is special. Everyone wants to play in it and it motivates you to keep going… We have to stay positive and believe. We are capable of winning this competition but we have to improve and make every player play at their best.
– Hansi Flick, FC Barcelona coach
We have a group of players with a lot of experience and who have played a lot of important matches.
We want the scale of this game to be a motivating factor for players and help us grow. Of course, we can't back down or be afraid. From my point of view, it's about making the right plan. We have to play to their strengths and at the same time try to give our best moments.
– Eddie Howe, Newcastle manager
