Former footballer Sorin Tufan died in the naval accident in Portul Midia

Sorin Tufan, former footballer at Farul Constanța and Steaua Bucharest, is among the victims of Wednesday's accident in Midia Port, when the tugboat Astana capsized during port maneuvers, Farul Constanța announced.

“The Farul family received today, with deep sadness, the news that one of the victims of the tragic naval accident in the port of Midia is the former player of our team, Sorin Tufan. A product of the Farul children and juniors center, where he started football at the age of 10, with teacher Iosif Bukkosi, Sorin Tufan made his debut for the senior team in 1985 and played for the white and blue until 1992, in over 100 parties”, Farul Constanţa transmitted, in an information on the Facebook page.

According to Ziua Constanța, Sorin Tufan, 57, was the captain of the Astana tug that sank. Four other sailors were in the tugboat at the time of the sinking and are currently being sought.

Who was Sorin Tufan?

Sorin Tufan, 57, was the son of Marin Tufan, a participant in the 1970 World Championship (Mexico) and the all-time top scorer of the “sailors”. He worked as a right back at Farul Constanța and at Steaua.

He also reached the Champions League, but retired from competitive activity at the age of 26, later dedicating himself to the maritime field.

“At 57 years old, Tufan remains in the memory of the supporters as one of the soul players of Farul from the 80s-90s, part of the generation that brought the team back to the first stage of Romanian football. Debuting very young, at only 17 years old, he quickly established himself as a starter and contributed decisively to the promotion of the “sailors” in Division A”, the Stelists' Association reported on the Facebook page.

“The transfer to Steaua Bucharest, in 1992, represented an important moment of his career, coming at the wish of coach Anghel Iordănescu. Although injuries limited his career in Ghencea, Tufan had the opportunity to perform in European competitions as well, making appearances in the red-blue shirt.

Retired prematurely, at only 26 years old, the former defender chose a completely different path, away from the stadium, becoming a sailor. He thus followed another family tradition, being the son of Marin Tufan, former international and participant in the 1970 World Championship”, the Association of Stelists also transmitted.
