Hundreds of migrants swim to the shores of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta
According to local police, illegal immigrants took advantage of thick fog to swim to Ceuto from neighboring Morocco. Ceuta, along with another enclave, Melilla, are the EU's only land borders with Africa, and migrants use them to enter Europe illegally.
Most of the migrants were intercepted near El Tarajal beach, but some managed to make their way into the EU. Since Thursday, police have detained an average of about 700 migrants trying to enter Ceuta every day. On Sunday evening, when there was heavy fog at sea, about 1,500 people tried to break into the enclave.
It is alleged that the Ceuta police only deport Moroccan citizens. Citizens of other countries are taken to special centers where they are given asylum and released after a few days.
