The Prime Minister assures that he will intervene on fuel prices if “things do not calm down”

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared, on Digi24, that the fuel price increase in Romania is much lower than international quotations or Western European countries. Bolojan says that the Government will intervene if “things do not calm down”.

“If we follow, the increase in prices in Romania is much lower than the increase in prices at international quotations or than the countries, for example, in Western Europe. So here, from this point of view, this is the purchasing power. The purchasing power in Romania is, indeed, lower than in Germany, much lower, but, unfortunately, the prices on these markets are formed at an international level,” said the prime minister, quoted by News.ro.

Support scheme for farmers

Ilie Bolojan showed that the Government adopted the support scheme for transporters.

“We gave them a predictability until the end of the year, whereby, from the cost of the excise tax, we will bear not 65 money as before, but 85 money, with a quarterly evaluation, so that, if things go in a bad direction, we can increase this compensation, if, at a certain moment, the prices are reduced and come back annually, we can reduce the compensation. We will do this for farmers as well”, announced the head of the Executive.

Bolojan stated that he will meet, on Monday, with the president of OMV, Alfred Stern, to identify solutions so that the prices at the pump remain at a bearable level, given that Petrom uses part of the oil it needs from internal resources.

“In the conditions where things will not calm down and we will reach an increase that will already become a level that will actually create problems (…) we will have to see what can be done, in order to calm things down”, mentioned Ilie Bolojan.

The head of OMV, meetings with the president and the prime minister

During the morning, the Presidential Administration also announced that President Nicușor Dan will have a meeting with Alfred Stern.

The meeting comes in the context of the increase in fuel prices: on Friday, gasoline approached the threshold of 8.5 lei/liter, and diesel 9 lei/liter.

Official sources told HotNews that the meeting was set some time before the start of the conflict in Iran. The discussion will focus on Neptune Deep, “but certainly the international situation and how it affects the oil market will also be discussed,” according to HotNews sources.

An analysis by the Intelligent Energy Association estimated that the price of diesel in gas stations in Romania could reach 9.78 lei in two weeks, very close to the psychological threshold of 10 lei, if the authorities do not take any measures.
