Over six hundred working controllers
The next stage is training on simulators, after which future controllers undergo one-year training at the target workplace. Only after successfully passing the state examination do they obtain the right to practice their profession and join the operational service.
According to data provided by the Agency, PANSA currently employs over six hundred controllers and one hundred and seventy candidates are undergoing training. Every year, controllers serve over 800,000 air operations in Polish airspace, which covers over 334,000 square kilometers
Mostly on airport towers
PANSA draws attention to the division of controllers into three groups. Area controllers work in the operations room of the Air Traffic Management Center in Warsaw and do not have direct visual contact with planes flying over Poland. Approach controllers are responsible for safely bringing the machines to Polish airports and directing departing planes to designated routes. The largest group are controllers working on airport towers – there are over three hundred of them.
The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency remains the only institution in the country that trains and employs civilian flight controllers and manages air traffic over Poland. Its tasks include ensuring the safety of all aircraft taking off, landing and flying through Polish airspace.
