The attack in the “Crocus City Hall” took place on March 22, 2024. A group of armed attackers broke into the building just before the performance of the “Piknik” band, opened fire on the concert participants, and then set the hall on fire. According to the Investigative Committee, 149 people died as a result of the attack, including six children, and over 600 were injured. The perpetrators fled the scene and were arrested only the next day in the Bryansk region; all of them turned out to be citizens of Tajikistan.
The Afghan cell of the terrorist organization “Islamic State – Khorasan Province” took responsibility for the attack. At the same time, Russian investigators stated that the group's attack was organized “in the interests of the current Ukrainian authorities” in order to “destabilize the political situation” in Russia. In Kiev, any connection with the attack was denied.
On March 7, 2024, the U.S. Embassy in Russia publicly warned of the threat of extremist attacks in Moscow, including on concert halls. However, President Vladimir Putin described the warnings as a “provocation”, “open blackmail” and an attempt to “destabilize society”.
