Oil prices fell sharply following Trump's comments, the Financial Times reports.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded at $89.89 a barrel in afternoon trade in New York, topping $119 during the Asian session. The US West Texas Intermediate fell to $86.89 from a high of $119.48.
U.S. stocks also rose, with the S&P 500 up 0.9 percent and the Nasdaq Composite up 1.4 percent.

In a phone interview with CBS News on Monday afternoon, President Donald Trump said the US war with Iran may be close to ending.
“I think the war is complete, for the most part”Trump said, speaking from his golf club in Doral, Florida. “[Iranul] it has no navy, no communications, no air force. Their missiles are at minimum level. Their drones are being shot down everywhere, including in the manufacturing process.”
The US military announced that it struck more than 3,000 Iranian targets in the first week of operations. “If you look, they have nothing left. Militarily, there is nothing left”Trump added.
Of Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump told CBS News: “I have no message for him. Absolutely none”the president said, adding that he has someone else in mind to lead the country. The claims come after Iran announced on Sunday night that Mojtaba Khamenei would replace his father as the country's supreme leader.
Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil production passes, has come to a virtual standstill.
Trump said the U.S “could do a lot” over the strait and threatened Iran if it tried to block the passage. “They have fired everything they have to fire and they better not try anything else it will be the end of that country… If they do anything bad it would mean the end of Iran and its name would never be heard from again.”
Trump also said the strait is currently open and ships have already entered, but added that still “thinking about taking it”.
Initially, Trump had estimated that the war would last about a month. “We are way ahead of schedule”he told CBS News on Monday.
That same afternoon, the president repeated that the war is on “very complete, mostly”and the Department of Defense posted on X the messages: “We have only just begun to fight” and “without mercy”.
To date, seven Americans have lost their lives in combat. Asked if he thought the war would end soon, Trump said: “The ending is only in my mind, no one else's.”
