It had previously been announced that the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon was ready to be deployed on the mission. Now British authorities have confirmed that the RFA ship Lyme Bay is also being brought to a high level of readiness for a possible deployment in the eastern Mediterranean, according to Sky News.
According to the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom, the decision is part of a precautionary plan in the context of tensions in the region.
“As part of prudent planning, we have taken the decision to bring RFA Lyme Bay to a high level of readiness as a precaution should it be required to assist with maritime missions in the eastern Mediterranean,” said a ministry spokesman.
RFA Lyme Bay is a landing craft, equipped to also function as an aircraft platform and equipped with medical facilities. The ship is frequently used in humanitarian missions and disaster response operations.
Tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, with several Western states consolidating their military presence in the Mediterranean region.
