On February 13, 2023, on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine there was registered draft law on amendments to the Labor Code of Ukraine to establish Ukrainian holidays No. 9009. Its initiators were people's deputies Oksana Savchuk, Natalia Pipa, Solomiya Bobrovskaya and others.
They proposed making February 25, Lesya Ukrainka’s birthday, Ukrainian Woman’s Day, and from the list of existing holidays withdraw International Women's Day, which is usually celebrated on March 8.
“Until now, at the state level, March 8, the so-called International Women’s Day, has been designated as a day off, which was established by the occupying Moscow regime in order to popularize its own view of the role and place of women. We consider it appropriate to celebrate Ukrainian Women’s Day on the birthday of the most famous Ukrainian writer and public figure, Lesya Ukrainka,” the draft law says.
If adopted, the law was supposed to come into force on the day following the day of publication, but the Verkhovna Rada has not yet considered it.
In March 2026 the company Rating Group released the results of a survey that showed that less than half of those surveyed (45%) plan to celebrate March 8th.
The Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine advised teachers to abandon “stereotypical scenarios and traditional bouquets according to the list” in schools on March 8 (International Women’s Day).
