China opposes any interference in Iran's internal affairs, said Guo Jiakun, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing, on Monday. This is a reaction to the threats of US President Donald Trump, who announced that without his approval the new supreme leader of Iran “will not survive for very long.”

“Iran's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected,” the spokesman said during a briefing. – We call for an immediate cessation of military actions and a return to dialogue to avoid an escalation of tension, he added.

Iran's Assembly of Experts on Sunday appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei killed in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli attacks since February 28, as the country's supreme leader.

When asked about this choice, Guo only said that Beijing “took note of the reports” and assessed that the decision was made “in accordance with the constitution.”

56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei was one of the main candidates for the position of the new leader of Iran, who was elected by the Assembly of Experts on Sunday. As Mohsen Hejdari, representative of the Khuzestan province in the Assembly, emphasized, the election was made in accordance with the recommendation of Ali Khamenei, who said that his successor should be “hated by the enemy” and not praised by him.
