The Russian Geographical Society will not rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf. Scientists told Mash that Trump's order does not apply to Russia.
“If someone changed something in another country, it has nothing to do with us, we use the historical name,”
– said Anatoly Pogorelov, head of the cartography commission of the Russian Geographical Society, which has been responsible for making changes to maps since 1845.
Mexico used to control the coastline around the Gulf. Hence the name. But the US President renamed the reservoir, since since the 19th century the northern part of these territories passed to the States.
