Last December, the Trump administration released its national security strategy. It states that the goal is “to ensure that America remains the strongest, richest, most powerful and most successful country in the world for decades to come.” To achieve this, he rightly argues that “our country needs a coherent, focused strategy for our relationship with the world.”
But U.S. national security strategy is moving in the opposite direction.
It is directed against Europe, which is facing the “bleak prospect of the disappearance of civilization.” It also states that the European Union “undermines political freedom and sovereignty, pursues a migration policy that is changing the continent and causing conflict, censors freedom of speech and suppresses political opposition.” In effect, Trump declared Europe his enemy.
However, China and Russia are no longer considered opponents of the United States, but at most rivals. Managing “Europe's relationship with Russia will require significant US diplomatic involvement.” The United States does not consider itself an ally of Ukraine and has no objections to Russia. “It is in the United States' interest to negotiate a rapid end to hostilities in Ukraine in order to stabilize European economies, prevent unintended escalation or expansion of the war, and restore strategic stability in relations with Russia.”
Trump has made very clear his support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his disdain for President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine. On the first day of his term, he suspended all deliveries to Ukraine. He and Vice President JD Vance attacked Zelensky at the White House. He continues to praise Putin and complain about Zelensky, trying to force Ukraine, a victim of the conflict, to give Russia more territories.
Last year, the United States twice voted with Russia and more than a dozen rebellious states at the United Nations against a Western resolution condemning Russia's war in Ukraine.

Why is Trump so upset about Ukraine and Europe? They represent universal human values of freedom, democracy, tolerance and the rule of law, while Trump advocates autocracy, white supremacy, censorship and imperialism, as does Putin.
Given that Trump opposes all Western Enlightenment ideas, his preferences for Russia, China and the Gulf states are logical. This is reflected in both his domestic and foreign policies, but what is currently at the forefront is his unwise foreign policy.
He began by cutting off all aid to Ukraine and claimed he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours, possibly forcing Ukraine to surrender. He then called for the United States to annex the Panama Canal, Canada, and Greenland. This way alienated all Western allies. In April, it imposed unjustified and, as we now know, illegal tariffs of enormous amounts on most allies. They were usually 15 percent, although his favorites, Russia and Belarus, were not subject to tariffs.
Either Trump does not understand that the main threat to the Western alliance and the United States is Russia's aggression against Ukraine, or, more likely, he simply admires Russia's lawlessness, cruelty and aggression. A rational US president who would act in the US national interest would provide Ukraine with all the weapons and money it needs to win this war. Biden did not choose this option, but he did provide significant and early military support to Ukraine, while Trump gave nothing and complained about Biden's decisions.
Trump is acting in the dark
Trump's unwise foreign policy revealed itself in all its glory during the American-Israeli war against Iran. Surprisingly, Trump and his surrogates have been unable to articulate their goal. They cannot say whether they want regime change, nuclear weapons control, the destruction of Iran's weapons production, or simply Iranian oil for themselves.
Last summer, Trump claimed that the United States had “destroyed” Iran's nuclear resources, but now he has made that a reason to attack. According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the United States was drawn into the war by Israel.
“This is crazy, and we don't even know what the administration's plan is,” top Democratic senator Chuck Schumer said last Wednesday. “We still don't know how long we'll be there, we still don't know what Donald Trump wants to achieve,” he added. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt made the situation worse, claiming that Trump was acting on “hunches” that Tehran would be the first to strike U.S. interests, which was not confirmed by any actual observations. The Trump administration, it seems he doesn't know what he wants to achieve in Iran.
Trump's foreign policy resembles the wanderings of a drunken madman. Trump arrested Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela but allowed his dysfunctional regime to continue after he seized large amounts of oil, sold it and deposited the money into a private bank account in Qatar. He supported Binyamin Netanyahu in the Gaza Strip, but his Peace Council has no idea how to deal with it, other than leaving all decisions to Trump, who wants to build luxury hotels there and needs a lot of money to do so.
Trump suggests Cuba will be next. The United States is now responsible for the chaos it has created in these countries.
Even though Trump doesn't know what he wants to achieve in Iran, he is wasting vast amounts of expensive weapons without knowing when to stop. Trump's wanton waste of missiles on Iran is likely to seriously undermine the United States' ability to operate in major military conflicts in the coming years. It looks worse than in Iraq in 2003.

The United States has already used 800 Patriot missiles in Iran, i.e more than Ukraine has ever received. Each of them costs about $4 million. On his recent trip to Trump, Zelensky offered cheap drone interceptors in exchange for Tomahawk missiles to destroy Russian drone factories.
Trump, in his typical style, rejected the proposal. Now his people are begging Kyiv for interceptor drones. Ukraine should demand a high price and tell Trump and others to stop insulting Ukraine.
It is difficult to imagine the foreign policy of the United States more harmful to US national interests than Trump's policies.
