Folk calendar

Mauritius day

The holiday was named in memory of the Christian saints who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries – the martyrs of Apamea, Mauritius and 70 soldiers.

People believed that it was to Mauritius that rooks, starlings and swallows flew home. At the same time, they noticed: if the birds arrived earlier than the appointed day, this means spring will come soon. They also said: “Early swallows – for a happy year.” These birds have always been loved in Rus' – and many signs have been associated with them. Among them are the following: swallows dart low – towards the rain, high – towards the wind; whoever destroys a swallow's nest will have freckles; whoever washes himself with milk at the first swallow will be white.

The first work in the fields and gardens began in Mauritius. Manure accumulated over the winter was transported to future arable land and beds. This had to be done while the road was still strong and allowed access to the fields. Manure, as the only available fertilizer, was treated with respect, and proverbs and sayings were written about it. However, there were also some subtleties here. For example, manure could not be plowed into the ground either during the full moon or during the new moon, so that weeds would not grow. The best time was considered the last quarter of the moon.

On this day, early cabbage was sown in the southern regions. This “premature” sowing protects against attack by caterpillars during the period when heads of cabbage are setting. And from under the first spring plow you could take a clod of earth and put it in the hut – this was supposed to drive all the bugs out of the house.

The so-called “black fish soup” was served on the table in Mauritius – a soup for which the meat was boiled in cucumber brine with the addition of various spices and roots.
