The US military announced on Wednesday that it had killed an Iranian official who led a team that organized a plot to assassinate President Trump, but the official was not on the initial list of US targets, reports Reuters.
“The leader of the team that tried to assassinate President Trump was hunted down and killed. Iran tried to kill President Trump and President Trump laughed at the end,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a news conference.
Hegseth noted that the Iranian official was not among the major targets of US strikes, but he called for him to be removed as well.
“I have made sure, myself and others, that those responsible for this will eventually end up on the target list,” Hegseth said, without naming the Iranian official.
In 2024, the US Department of Justice indicted an Iranian in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Trump ordered by the Revolutionary Guards. At that time, Trump had already been elected president but had not taken office.
Tehran has denied allegations that it targeted Trump or other US officials.
