Israel and the US airstrike and hit on Tuesday, on the fourth day of the war in Iran, the building near Tehran of the body in charge of electing the new supreme leader of Iran, local news agencies announced, according to AFP, Reuters and The Times of Israel.

“American-Zionist criminals attacked the building of the Assembly of Experts in Qom”, a town south of Tehran, the Tasnim news agency wrote.

Local media broadcast images of the building destroyed by the attacks.

Witnesses told Reuters that the area near the Assembly of Experts was hit.

It is still unclear who was inside the building when Tuesday's bombings struck.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on Saturday in the first wave of US and Israeli strikes.

However, an Israeli defense source has already confirmed that the Israeli air force attacked a building in the Iranian city of Qom where senior clerics had gathered to elect Iran's new supreme leader.

The Assembly of Experts has 88 members, but it is unclear how many of them were in the building at the time of the attack, the Israeli official was quoted as saying.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military (IDF) announced that it had attacked a high-ranking Iranian commander in the Iranian capital. “A short time ago, the Israeli army struck a high-ranking commander of the Iranian terrorist regime in Tehran,” the IDF said in a statement, without providing further details.

On Monday, Israel announced that it had bombed the offices of the Iranian presidency and the Supreme National Security Council of Iran in Tehran.
