The target of the attack was the ship “Skylight”under the flag of Palau, Oman's state news agency reported. The crew of the tanker consists of Indian and Iranian nationals.

For now, it is not clear who is behind the attack. However, the incident takes place in a tense context, after the authorities warned that Iran would have threatened ships transiting the strait, amid the American-Israeli attacks.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key strategic point for global oil transit. It lies between Oman and Iran and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, providing access to the Arabian Sea.

Any attack on merchant shipping in this area could cause major economic disruption globally, especially if the route becomes unsafe for international maritime traffic.
