Three senior officials, including President Massoud Pezeshkian, will ensure the transition in Iran after the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, one of his advisers, Mohammad Mokhber, announced on Sunday, quoted by state television, according to AFP.
This triumvirate will consist of Pezeshkian, head of the judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei and a jurist from the Guardian Council of the Constitution, Mokhber said.
The announcement came after Iranian state television and publications confirmed the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, overnight.
“The supreme leader of Iran has reached martyrdom,” the IRIB public television channel reported in the early hours of Sunday.
“This great scholar and mujahid (fighter) sacrificed his life to uplift Iran… and is in the great presence of martyrs from above,” Mehr news agency wrote.
Several members of Khamenei's family were killed in the attacks, Iranian state media also confirmed.
After it becomes official that Ali Khamenei has been killed, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard reacts: “The hand of revenge of the Iranian nation … will not let them escape”
