Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has become the object of ironies on social networks after announcing that he bought an expensive globe to see where Greenland is.
The derisive comments quickly invaded social networks, both because of the price of the object, more than ten times higher than the one usually paid by Czechs, which varies between 400 and 1,000 crowns, and also because of the Prime Minister's statements, AFP and News.ro report.
“I bought this globe for 15,000 kroner (617 euros), a nice big globe, to see exactly where Greenland is,” Babis told reporters on Monday when asked about his government's position on US President Donald Trump's ambitions for this self-governing territory of Denmark.
On Tuesday, the self-proclaimed “Trumpist” billionaire went further in a Facebook video, highlighting the advantages of a globe over maps, which he said misrepresent geographic realities.
“On this beautiful globe, we can see the real size of Greenland compared to the United States and Europe. And there, nearby, is Russia, and if there was a conflict, God forbid, the missile should not fly very far,” he explained.
Netizens suggest which country he should look for instead “on his beautiful globe”
“The scammers strike again. They sold a globe to a gullible pensioner for 15,000 kroner,” captions one cartoon, while X-Network user “BezeLzi” (“No Lies”) suggests that Babis, who wants to cut aid to Ukraine, should seek out this country at war with Russia on his beautiful globe to “learn how close the war is.”
According to Ondrej Sveda, spokesman for price comparison site Heureka, globe searches have become popular. “Since Monday, we have seen a 420% increase, that is, a jump of several hundred searches,” he told AFP.
Andrej Babiš, 71, returned to power in December and leads a coalition formed by his ANO party and the right-wing “Voice of Drivers” and far-right SPD.
