What did Trump say about the goal of attacking Iran?
As described by Reuters, citing two sources familiar with intelligence information, the CIA estimated, on the eve of the US and Israeli attack on Iran, that if the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, were killed as a result of military intervention, his place would be taken by one of the representatives of the hard wing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Reuters notes that the CIA reports did not contain any clear conclusions.
The IRGC is one of the branches of the Iranian armed forces, one of whose main goals is to protect Shiite clerics.
The US and Israel attacked Iran
On Saturday, the United States and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran. US President Donald Trump said the goal of the attack on Iran was “freedom for the people.” In response, Tehran launched a wave of wide-ranging attacks against Israel and American bases in neighboring countries.
Trump has been signaling for many weeks that the US is interested in regime change in Iran. However, there have been no reports about who the United States believes would lead the country.
