USR rejected with an overwhelming majority the proposal to limit how many mandates the party's parliamentarians and mayors can have

The proposal was made by deputies Claudiu Năsui and Cristina Prună who requested that all elected officials cannot hold this position for more than two mandates. At Saturday's Congress, over 90% of members voted against, USR announced in a press release.
The two initiators, Claudiu Năsui and Cristina Prună, are, in turn, on their third mandate in the Romanian Parliament. They argued that “the renewal of the USR can only be done through deeds, not slogans” when they initiated the amendment.
“One of the amendments rejected by a majority of over 90% was a proposal to limit all internal and external mandates held by USR members to two, including for USR's elected mayors,” USR said in a press release at the end of the Congress.
If the measure passes, it applies to all deputies, senators, MEPs, mayors, County Council presidents, local and county councilors. Including the president of the formation, Dominic Fritz, is now in his second term as mayor of Timisoara, while several MPs are in their third term.
What else did the USR Congress decide?
The 500 delegates gathered in Sibiu voted for the introduction of performance conditions for the county branches in the statute, with the possibility that the National Office, with a two-thirds majority, can dismiss the management of a branch that does not fulfill its obligations. The first performance criterion is the results obtained in the local and national elections.
“It is an accountability mechanism that aims to increase the organizational and political effectiveness of the branches,” said Dominic Fritz.
Another change reforms the voting system for domestic offices and replaces the winner-takes-all rule with a plurality system. The USR Congress also decided to give the leadership forums the right to co-opt “valuable personalities from the community” who join the party.
