At least one person is seriously injured, six are in moderate condition and 32 have minor injuries. The tram crashed into a building and a shop window was damaged. The incident occurred around 16.00 local time, the Italian press reports.
At the scene, rescuers provided medical care to about ten people, while firefighters worked to extract a trapped passenger. Five special vehicles and 25 firefighters were mobilized for the intervention. The exact cause of the incident is unclear, although excessive speed in a curve is believed to have contributed to the derailment.
Among the eyewitnesses, a passenger told ANSA: “I thought it was an earthquake. I was seated and fell to the ground with the other passengers. It was terrible. Luckily I only hit my knee, but the man next to me was bleeding from the head.”
Other passengers said that they first felt a noise under the tram, then it derailed and they crashed into the building: “The tram swerved, picked up speed and hit a building. I was standing next to the driver and the other passengers hit me,” said a witness.
