Former British Prime Minister became Zelensky's consultant on economic recovery – media


The politician became a member of the International Advisory Council for Economic Revival under Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Sunak's role is unpaid.

The council will provide expert advice to Zelensky and his economic adviser, former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. The first meeting was held on February 26, the publication writes. It was attended by the head of the World Bank Ajay Banga, the president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Odile Renaud-Basso, as well as representatives of Siemens, BlackRock, Citigroup and ArcelorMittal.

The meeting discussed strengthening Ukraine's energy sustainability for next winter and expanding investment opportunities, including in the defense industry. Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have remained a major problem for the country in recent months.

Sunak said he considers it an honor to support Ukraine and expressed confidence that with human capital, natural resources and innovation potential, the country can become one of the most dynamic economies in Europe.

After leaving the post of prime minister, Sunak retains his mandate as an MP, and also holds a number of positions in the private and academic sectors.

Context

Sunak took over as UK Prime Minister in October 2022.

22 June 2024 Sunak announced early parliamentary elections and asked King Charles III to dissolve Parliament. After him, Keir Starmer became Prime Minister.
