Weather conditions and increased producer costs were the reasons that caused a sharp rise in prices for fresh vegetables in the Krasnoyarsk Territory at the beginning of this year. This was reported by the Central Bank.

Thus, in January the prices of cucumbers and tomatoes increased significantly. “This is due to forced price adjustments on the part of greenhouse farms. Enterprises transferred into the cost of products the increase in heating and electricity costs, which occurred during the peak winter period. The situation was aggravated by abnormal frosts in January, which were stronger than usual and required additional energy costs for heating greenhouses. However, if we compare prices over the year, tomatoes in January were cheaper than 12 months ago, and cucumbers increased in price slightly,” experts said.
At the same time, some other products continued to fall in price due to record supply. Thus, for the third month in a row, the price of sugar in stores has decreased (minus 6% over the year). Eggs, which were cheaper last year, have not changed in price since December, but over 12 months the cumulative price decline has reached 16%.
“We see that the current price dynamics are associated with objective reasons. The increase in the cost of cucumbers and tomatoes is a temporary phenomenon caused by seasonality and abnormally cold January weather. Enterprises are forced to include their costs in prices. In general, for the year, vegetables, despite the January jump, fell in price, which indicates the high volatility of this segment, which is characterized by strong and frequent price fluctuations, depending on the season and the amount of energy resources for their cultivation. At the same time, the decline in sugar prices is the result of a good sugar beet harvest in 2025 throughout the country and high reserves. This led to an increase in supply and, as a consequence, to a decrease in prices, first at the wholesale and then at the retail level,” commented Sergei Zhuravlev, manager of the Krasnoyarsk Branch of the Bank of Russia.
But trips to public catering still hit the wallets of Krasnoyarsk residents. After the December pre-New Year buffets, banquets and holiday demand in cafes and restaurants, prices in January remained virtually unchanged for the month. But on average, the menu of establishments has increased in price by 10.5% over the year. The reason is said to be increased catering costs for food, utilities and staff salaries.
Experts note that in general, in January in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the annual increase in prices for food, non-food goods and services amounted to 6.4%, which is slightly higher than in the country (6%). According to forecasts, this year price growth in Russia will continue to slow down and drop to 4.5-5.5%, and in 2027 and beyond it will be close to 4% per year.
