At the Central Entrance of the Krasnoyarsk Pillars National Park, tourists noticed a Great Tawny Owl.
The press service of the national park clarified that the bird of prey was sitting not far from the gate at the Laletino cordon. She looked at the pedestrians with curiosity and made no attempts to fly into the forest.
According to Nadezhda Goncharova, a methodologist at Krasnoyarsk Pillars, owls rarely catch the eye of tourists. However, you can still meet them while walking in the national park, especially in winter. At this time of year they looking for nlook forfly closer to the feeders, where they hunt small birds.
“In the current snowy winter, it is not easy for owls to hunt mice. Temperature swings make it even worse. During thaws, the snow becomes saturated with water, filling snow holes and passages where mouse-like rodents live – the main prey of the great owl at any time of the year. Because of this, mice die en masse, and the dense crust that forms prevents the tawny owl from reaching the remaining mice,” the specialist said.
In spring, owls begin searching for a suitable nest to raise their chicks. The number of owlets directly depends on food, that is, on the same mice, the national park added.
