The famous heart surgeon Renat Akchurin, who operated on Boris Yeltsin, has died.
Akchurin was also involved in science and was a mentor to young doctors. In 1996, he performed a complex heart operation on President Yeltsin – after which the politician was able to run for a second term. Although other doctors feared that Boris Nikolaevich would not survive the intervention.
Akchurin was 78 years old.
