Donald Trump announced in the US Congress that the decision of the judges of the Supreme Court to cancel the customs duties is “very regrettable”

American President Donald Trump on Tuesday night assessed as “very regrettable” the recent decision of the Supreme Court canceling a large part of his customs duties, in the presence of some of the judges who pronounced the historic decision, notes AFP.

“Just four days ago, a regrettable decision was issued by the Supreme Court of the United States (…) A very regrettable decision,” the American president declared during “his State of the Union speech” in front of the Congress, attended by four magistrates of the Court, three of whom considered that he did not have the power to introduce these customs duties, writes Agerpres.

The president's tone was noticeably more measured than in the hours following the decision.

He then accused the Court of conceding “foreign influences“, naming the judges who ruled against his tariffs “idiots” and “poodles” in the service of the left “radicals”.

Donald Trump has already reinstated a new 10% surcharge on goods entering the United States. It will expire after 150 days, unless a vote in Congress makes them permanent.

In his opinion, the alternatives left to him to impose customs duties are “a bit more complex, but probably better” and does not require the approval of Congress.

He reiterated his hope that revenue from these tariffs on imported goods would eventually replace the income tax.
