The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, said on Monday that the US assured the G7 countries that it did not want to cause instability after the US Supreme Court invalidated an important part of Donald Trump's tariff policy. The president announced further new global tariffs of 15 percent.

Tajani wrote on Platform X: “I attended an important meeting of G7 trade ministers from Brussels to immediately raise the issue of the US Supreme Court decision on tariffs.”
He added: “We have received assurances from the US side of their will not to create instability for our companies. It is important that we continue to work constructively with Washington to ensure a rapid transition to the new system. On both sides of the Atlantic, we have a common goal: predictability for our companies, a strengthened economic partnership and a renewed commitment to growth.”
On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court found that President Trump did not have the authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This act, previously used mainly to introduce sanctions, was the legal basis for most of the tariffs imposed by Trump, including 10 percent tariffs on goods from almost all countries in the world.
In response to Friday's ruling, Trump sharply criticized the Supreme Court justices and announced that he had imposed 10% tariffs on goods imported into the US for 150 days. On Saturday, the president announced that he would increase it to 15 percent. (PAP)
