The EU is preparing for a ban on the export of scrap metal: there is a risk of a shortage
The European Commission has announced the beginning of control over the export and import of scrap metal — ferrous metals, aluminum and copper. The reason is the risks of a shortage of raw materials for metallurgy and possible production stops.
A significant part of the scrap is exported to Asia, Turkey and the USA. At the same time, the EC emphasizes the importance of scrap for steel production and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
After collecting the data, the commission will consider the possibility of export restrictions.
In Ukraine, scrap production has also fallen to its lowest level since 1995, while exports are steadily increasing. At the same time, a significant part is exported through the EU through the gray scheme, which has already cost our state budget more than UAH 3 billion.
