The proposals presented will be included in the draft law on crime and policing, currently under consideration in parliament. This is the result of the outrage that erupted around the world at the turn of December and January, when it turned out that Grok, the artificial intelligence company xIA, allows the generation of unclothed photos of real people. These photos were later posted on the X platform.

“The online world is at the forefront of the 21st century fight against violence against women and girls. That's why my Government is taking urgent action against chatbots and 'nudification' tools. Today we're going a step further by ordering companies to remove any non-consensual images within 48 hours,” said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The media market regulator Ofcom and the personal data protection authority ICO have already initiated investigations into Grok's case.

As part of the announced changes, the government wants victims to have to report a given photo only once. This would mean that once you report a photo, it will be removed from multiple platforms at once, and from then on it will be automatically removed on every new upload.

In addition, these types of images would be treated by Ofcom in the same way as child sexual abuse and terrorism content, i.e. they would be digitally flagged so that whenever someone tried to repost them, they would be automatically deleted. (PAP)
