Germany wants to sell a former prison in Bavaria. Property inspection is ongoing

As merkur.de writes, the state-owned company Immobilien Freistaat Bayern announced that an official tender for the sale of this property will be announced only in the coming weeks. However, information about the planned sale has already appeared in many media reports, which caused a reaction among potential buyers of the former prison. According to merkur.de and other German media, there are already several applications from interested parties. The price of the property has not been announced yet.

They closed a prison in Bavaria. It didn't fit the concept
The last prisoners were moved out of the facility in Neuburg an der Donau just a few months ago. The prison was closed last year because it was no longer economically viable. An audit of the facility showed that “continuation of the operation of the Neuburg an der Donau prison is not possible within the framework of the modern, general concept of the Bavarian penitentiary system and rational financial management.” The facility required major renovation and other investments. The location in the city center did not help it function, and the fact that it was entered on the list of monuments necessitated meeting additional requirements.
The property is a complex of three buildings from different eras, including a chapel and the seat of the former riding school of the Wittelsbach dynasty from 1577. The latter housed a workshop where prisoners produced toy cars. An inspection is currently taking place there. It includes determining the exact size and compliance with the regulations on the protection of monuments. The exact number of rooms is also not yet determined.

According to German media, when you look at the facility from the outside, it is hard to forget what it was used for. The barred windows, reinforced gates in the corridors and barbed wire in the courtyard remind us of this. The prison in Neuburg an der Donau had room for 73 prisoners. Although the equipment was spartan, it is worth mentioning that some cells had an attractive view of the city's old town.
