On Lake Baikal near Cape Khoboy on Olkhon Island, a UAZ car with nine people inside, most of them tourists from China, went under the ice.

It all happened on the afternoon of February 20th. At about 3 p.m., the driver left the recreation center in the village of Khuzhir along with eight tourists from China. The excursion headed to Cape Khoboy directly on the ice of the lake. While driving, the car fell through the ice.

Seven tourists and the driver, a 44-year-old local resident, were killed. Among the victims is a child born in 2013. One person managed to get out.

The department clarified that the tourists did not book the trip through tour operators, but made an agreement directly with the driver. The surviving passenger is now at the recreation center and will be questioned by investigators in the near future. The identities of the five victims have already been established.

The governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev, recalled that the ice crossing to Olkhon is still not open, traveling on the ice is strictly prohibited and deadly.

As reported by sibnovosti.ru, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under articles on the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements and negligence. The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Irkutsk was notified of the incident. The prosecutor's office took control of the investigation.
