The European Union called for stability in the transatlantic trade relationship, after the United States Supreme Court annulled, by a decision adopted by 6 votes to 3, on Friday, the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on countries around the world.
“We remain in close contact with the US administration as we await clarification on what steps they intend to take following this decision,” Olof Gill, the European Commission's deputy chief spokesman, said in a statement, as cited by Politico.
“Companies on both sides of the Atlantic depend on stability and predictability in their trading relationship. That's why we continue to support low tariffs and work to reduce them,” added Gill.
The European Union broadly expects the Trump administration to reimpose tariffs through other mechanisms, such as Section 232 investigations, which have in the past led to tariffs on European steel and aluminum.
“We have indeed followed this decision. However, we expect the US administration to use other legal tools to reintroduce the tariffs,” a French diplomat told the quoted source.
The US Supreme Court struck down the tariffs imposed by Trump
The US Supreme Court on Friday struck down sweeping tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump under a national emergency law, rejecting one of the most controversial claims to his authority in a decision with major implications for the global economy.
The Supreme Court upheld a lower court's ruling that the Republican president's use of that 1977 law overstepped the bounds of his authority.
