Luke's Day, Mighty One
On this day, the memory of Luke of Greece, a Greek monk who lived at the end of the 9th – first half of the 10th centuries, is celebrated.
In Rus', on the day of Luke, it was customary to bake pies – naturally, with onions. The family, as a rule, ate only part of them, and the rest was distributed to the poor – “for good luck.” It was believed that everything given would be returned a hundredfold.
Deceased ancestors were also commemorated on Luka. On this occasion they said: “If your parents are alive, honor them; if they are dead, remember them.”
In addition, this day was considered the most suitable for preparing healing potions from roots. On Luka, cinquefoil, a grass whose leaves resemble a cross, acquired special properties. People called it “mighty,” that is, a plant that contains great power. The second name of the holiday comes from this word.
We kept an eye on Luka and the weather. For example, the midday wind promised a spring harvest. But a rare natural phenomenon – winter thunder – was considered a bad sign on this day. This meant that haymaking would be very poor.
