Folk calendar

Vukol Calfhouse, Beetles

On this day, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of Saint Vukol, a disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian. He was the first bishop of the Smyrna Church in Asia Minor.

On Vukola, as the day before, special attention was paid to the cows, making sure that they calved safely. It was believed that from this day calves began to be born (such calves born in February were called beetles). The peasants said so: “The Vukols will come – all the bugs will flock.” Pregnant cows were given a lot of feed on this day – and the best. The barn was fumigated with thyme – so that the cows' calves were born strong and the milk was tasty.

The appearance of calves was also associated with the ritual of praying for milk. After 12 milk yields after calving, when the milk became usable, the housewives cooked porridge with it. The eldest woman in the house put a pot of porridge in a cup of oats and covered it with hay, and then raised this entire structure three times above her head and said: “For a hundred bulls! For a thousand heifers!” After this, the whole family sat down at the table and ate porridge. Hay and oats were given to the cow, and drag (skin removed from the porridge) to the calf.

On Vukola they remembered signs associated with cows: “If a swallow flies over a cow, it will not milk well”; “If it’s wet under the hoof, the cow will reduce milk”; “If a cow brings twins of single-coated calves, it’s good; if they’re of different coats, it’s bad”; “Don’t stroke the calf on the back – it will get sick.”

There were special signs for the weather. They said that frost on this day promised a stormy spring, a dry and hot summer.
