A ship in a convoy sank, on Thursday, on the right bank of the Sulina channel, near the 33rd nautical mile of the Danube, the spokesperson of the Romanian Naval Authority (ANR), Irina Puşcaşu, told Agerpres.

According to the source, the Pilot-8 ship, under the Romanian flag, was in a convoy, and following the event the navigable channel was not blocked and no pollution was recorded.

“The ship is currently sunk, and the owner has been notified that within 30 days to start the refloating activity”, stated the representative of the ANR, Irina Puşcaşu. Refloating is the operation by which a sunken ship is brought to the surface and refloated.

The Port Authority of Tulcea is investigating the circumstances in which the event occurred.

The Pilot-8 ship was built in the Giurgiu Shipyard in 1981 for the Lower Danube River Administration (AFDJ) from Galati, to be used in the activity of embarking/disembarking pilots on board ships on the maritime Danube and at Bara Sulina.

The ship was used until 2018, and the data made public on the website of the Galaţi institution show that in 2024, the AFDJ management put its repair works up for auction.
