The mayor at the end of the mandate of the American Metropolitan New York, Eric Adams, announced that he is abandoning his re -election, just a month before this poll closely supervised by President Donald Trump, AFP notes.

“Despite everything I have succeeded, I cannot continue my campaign for re-election,” said in a video posted on X, Mayor Eric Adams, fragile by corruption charges and who intended to run as an independent.

“I was unfairly accused for fighting for this city (…), the constant media speculation about my future and the decision of the campaign to retain millions of dollars undermined my ability to collect the necessary funds for a serious campaign,” added Eric Adams.

Accused for corruption

The first mayor of New York accused during the exercise of his mandate, Eric Adams, an atypical political figure, coming from the right wing of the Democratic Party, had pleaded innocent in September 2024 to the allegations of corruption and illegal financing of the campaign, in a file involving Turkey, reports Agerpres.

The democratic mayor has claimed for months that his judicial problems are caused by his disagreements on immigration with previous president Joe Biden and has operated on the administration of President Donald Trump.

In February, the Department of Justice ordered the prosecutors to cancel his accused.

Zohran Mamdani rival

In April, Eric Adams announced that he will run for a second term as an independent to bypass the primary Democratic elections, won by Zohran Mamdani, 33, in front of Andrew Cuomo, 67, former governor of New York.

However, for several weeks, the American media evoked discussions between Eric Adams and the Trump administration for him to withdraw to Cuomo's benefit, and an independent candidate.

The mayor at the end of the mandate formulated, in his video recording, veiled criticisms against Mamdani, saying: “A major change is welcome and necessary, but not to trust those who claim that the answer is to destroy the system that we have built throughout the generations. This is not a change, this is chaos.”

This young New York MP, born in Uganda, campaign, denouncing the high cost of life, promising free housing, buses and nurseries. He presents himself as a “socialist”.

Two weeks ago, US President Donald Trump attacked New York's democratic governor, Kathy Hoch, because she expressed her support in the New York municipal elections for Zohran Mamdani, a candidate of the left-wing of the Democratic Party and Trump as a “little Communist”.

Zohran Mamdani will run in the municipal elections on November 4 and against the Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
