Poland's budget deficit is much higher year on year. This is just the beginning

The budget deficit after January 2026 amounted to PLN 3,719.6 million – according to the estimates of the Ministry of Finance, published on the ministry's website. A hole of PLN 271.7 billion is planned for the entire year, so it is only 1.4 percent.
It is also difficult to say that these were “good bad beginnings”, because the deficit increased during the year. And that's significant, because by almost 17 percent, comparing with the same estimates last year.
Revenues amounted to PLN 55,559.4 million, including as much as PLN 50.4 billion from indirect taxes (VAT, excise duty). Revenues from this group of taxes increased by 18.6 percent y/y, of which excise duty decreased by 3.3%..
Expenditures amounted to PLN 59,279.0 million and the share of debt servicing costs increases noticeably. The long-term policy of budget deficits causes the debt to grow rapidly. In January, the state spent PLN 8.2 billion on its servicing, i.e. interest repayment and the costs of rolling over expiring debt securities, i.e. 99.7 percent. more year to year.
