Alina Gorghiu accuses Curtea de Argeș City Hall of not investing in water infrastructure, even though it had a surplus of 30 million lei

Alina Gorghiu (PNL) criticizes the local administration in Curtea de Argeș for the way it managed the water infrastructure, in the context where almost 50,000 inhabitants are affected by the lack of drinking water. The deputy, who is also the president of PNL Argeș, claims that the City Hall had, at the end of 2025, a budget surplus of over 30 million lei, but did not direct the funds to the modernization of the Cerbureni treatment plant and the rehabilitation of the distribution network.

According to Alina Gorghiu, the water infrastructure has not benefited from essential investments in the last decades.

For decades, the local administration in Curtea de Argeş has not made the necessary investments in the Cerbureni treatment plant and in the water network. The filters were not modernized, the basins were not cleaned, the essential maintenance works were not carried out. The technical report carried out by Veolia confirms the serious degradation of the infrastructure and the lack of interventions for approximately two decades. Today, the consequences of this negligence are borne by almost 50,000 people from Arges, who are exposed to sanitary risks and deprived of access to drinking water. Curtea de Arges City Hall had, at the end of 2025, a surplus of over 30 million lei.

This money had to be invested immediately, as early as November, for the modernization of the treatment plant and the rehabilitation of the water network. Instead, the mayor of Curtea de Argeş chose not to act, although he had the necessary resources to prevent and limit this crisis, and today he is requesting 9.7 million lei from the Romanian Government for repairs and consumables at the Aquaterm treatment plant”. the president of PNL Argeș sent in a press release.

“It's unacceptable”

The liberal leader accuses Curtea de Argeș City Hall that, instead of using its own resources, it is now requesting 9.7 million lei from the Government for repairs and consumables at the Aquaterm treatment plant.

“It is unacceptable that an administration that had tens of millions of lei at its disposal did not intervene in time, and now transfers responsibility and costs to the national budget, while citizens are forced to bear the consequences of an abandoned infrastructure”added Alina Gorghiu.

In this context, the local PNL councilors propose, according to the press release, two urgent measures:

– the full allocation of the budget surplus for immediate investments in the water network and in the treatment plant;

– suspension of water billing by Aquaterm until the Directorate of Public Health officially confirms that the water is drinkable.

“The people of Argesen deserve respect, transparency and real solutions. Drinking water is not a privilege. It is a fundamental right”says Gorghiu, according to the press release

We remind you that the Directorate of Public Health (DSP) Argeș announced on Monday, February 16, that bacteria are no longer present in the water in the network serving the municipality of Curtea de Argeș and the neighboring communes, but it remains undrinkable due to exceeding the permitted values for turbidity, iron and chlorine.

Water samples were taken on February 13, 2026 from several consumption points, including the Curtea de Argeș City Hall, the Municipal Hospital and four educational units, according to the latest analysis report.

DSP has informed the distribution company Aquaterm that it persists “variations of the Total Iron, Free Residual Chlorine and Turbidity parameters, the values of which exceed the maximum allowed limit”.

“The water is not intended for human consumption and can be used for household purposes and bodily hygiene maintenance”, states DSP Argeș.
