Viktor Orban has declared that Ukraine cannot join the European Union, his reaction coming after a particularly harsh criticism of the Hungarian Prime Minister by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Zelenski had another outing for Orban, with whom he has clashed publicly in recent weeks.
“Only Viktor can think of how to enlarge his belly, not how to enlarge his army to prevent Russian tanks from returning to the streets of Budapest.”
Orban shared a video clip of Zelenskiy's statement on X, to which he added a message beginning with “dear Volodymyr.”
“Thank you for another election speech in support of Ukraine's accession to the European Union. It will greatly help Hungarians to understand the situation more clearly,” the Hungarian Prime Minister wrote ironically.
“But there is something you do not understand: this debate is not about me and it is not about you. It is about the future of Hungary, Ukraine and Europe. That is precisely why you cannot become a member of the European Union,” he added.
Dear Volodymyr @ZelenskyyUa,
Thank you for yet another campaign speech in support of Ukraine's accession to the European Union. It will greatly help Hungarians see the situation more clearly.
There is, however, something you misunderstand: this debate is not about me and it is… https://t.co/2xixBgMcnu

The new exchange of words comes after, on Thursday, Orban told Zelenski that “the member states set the conditions, not the candidate countries” for the accession.
