Krasnoyarsk police have completed a criminal investigation into the trafficking of illegally harvested timber and its smuggling on an especially large scale.

A 39-year-old director of a transport company and a 41-year-old head of a company operating in the timber industry were charged with crimes. It has been established that the defendants exported timber to one of the East Asian countries across the customs border of the Eurasian Economic Union. To transport such cargo abroad, they purchased fictitious documents about the origin of the wood from unidentified persons and provided them to the customs authority.

According to law enforcement officials, in total, between October 2020 and May 2024, the criminals took from Russia more than 30 thousand cubic meters of lumber with a total value of over 392 million rubles.

The illegal activities of the men were classified under Part 3 of Art. 191.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Acquisition, storage, transportation, processing for the purpose of sale or sale of knowingly illegally harvested wood” and under Part 3 of Art. 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Smuggling of strategically important goods and resources.” Until the trial, both are under recognizance not to leave the place and proper behavior.
