Pierre Kaluluhis quarterback Juventuswas removed in the derby with Interthe team coached by Cristi Chivu, after a refereeing error. It ended 3-2 in favor of the Romanian coach.

In the 42nd minute, with the score 1-1, Kalulu went to Bastoni, who was advancing with the ball at his feet. He didn't touch the Inter defender, who dived onto the turf, feigning.

Referee Federico La Penna, however, called a foul in favor of Chivu's team and showed the Juventus player a yellow card.

It was Kalulu's second yellow card, so he was sent off. The VAR could not intervene, because the protocol does not include the correction of decisions regarding the awarding of yellow cards. VAR can interfere in the decisions of the “central” only when a “red” is given directly.

If the referee had correctly seen what happened to 'Giuseppe Meazza', it would have been Bastoni who should have been sent off. The Inter defender had a yellow and could have received the second one for simulation. In fact, Chivu was replaced at half-time, so as not to risk it.

Juventus players protested after La Penna's decision, but to no avail. Kalulu left the field and Inter benefited from the extra man at the end of the first half. The two teams entered the cabins with 1-1.

The 4 situations in which the VAR intervenes, according to the protocol in world football

  • Check any goals scored. If it's offside or not, if it was a foul or not, if it was a handball or not

  • Check penalty awarded or not awarded.

  • Check all red card situations, awarded or not awarded: only when it is a straight red card. It does not apply when it is “red” from two yellow cards

  • When a misidentification of the cautioned player occurs.
