The Minister of National Defense, Radu Miruță, had an official meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Shinjirō Koizumi, on Saturday, February 14, in Munich, during which both the current state of bilateral cooperation and the prospects for expanding cooperation in the context of regional and global security developments were analyzed.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference and emphasized the need to intensify the political-military dialogue and the development of joint projects in areas of strategic interest.
According to the information transmitted through a press release from the Ministry of Defense, both ministers highlighted the common interest in strengthening cooperation in the face of increasingly complex security risks, both in the Euro-Atlantic space and in the Indo-Pacific area.
During the meeting, the Romanian side welcomed the dynamics of bilateral relations and emphasized the readiness to deepen the partnership with Japan, including through the already existing cooperation instruments.
“Romania will continue to remain firmly engaged in efforts to deepen cooperation with Japan, both bilaterally and at the NATO level, in the context of common security risks in our region and in the Indo-Pacific area”, declared Radu Miruţă.
The two officials also analyzed the opportunities opened up by the Strategic Partnership between Romania and Japan, launched in 2023, a document that establishes the major directions of political, economic and security collaboration. In this framework, concrete possibilities for expanding cooperation, including the industrial and technological component in the field of defense, were discussed.
At the end of the meeting, the ministers agreed on the need to quickly turn the discussions into concrete results, announcing that a new bilateral agreement should be prepared and signed in the next period.
At the same time, the willingness to continue the dialogue and to capitalize on the existing cooperation formats was reaffirmed, with the objective of strengthening stability and security both in the Euro-Atlantic region and in the Indo-Pacific space.
