On Tuesday, Holm Laegreid shocked viewers by revealing she had cheated on her partner of six months, just moments after winning the biathlon bronze medal.
“There's someone I wanted to share this moment with, but who might not be watching today,” he said, according to The Sun. “Six months ago, I met the love of my life and the most beautiful and kind person in the world. And three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her.”
“I had a gold medal in my life. I only have eyes for her. I don't know what I'm getting at by saying this, but the sport has been a little different these past few days. So I wish I could share that with her. You have to admit when you do something you can't stand and when you hurt someone you love so much,” he added.
Hours after the event, Holm Laegreid revealed that he still hadn't heard back from her, adding: “I hope I'm not making it worse for her. Maybe this gesture can help, I don't know. We'll see.”
He also said: “I hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel for both of us.”
Holm Laegreid's girlfriend's reaction: “It's hard to forgive”
The biathlete's girlfriend, who wishes to remain anonymous, has now responded to his public statement.
In a response to Norwegian newspaper VG, she said: “Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world, it's hard to forgive. I didn't choose to be put in this situation and it hurts me to have to go through this. We have discussed it, and he is aware of my views on this.”
She also congratulated Holm Laegreid on her bronze medal and thanked her loved ones for their support.
Holm Laegreid took bronze in his event at the Antholz-Anterselva Biathlon Arena, finishing more than 40 seconds ahead of fourth-placed Olli Hiidensalo of Finland. His Norwegian compatriot Johan-Olav Botn won the gold after a flawless shooting performance.
