A new House of Culture opened in the Taimyr village of Nosok

In the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, a new House of Culture was opened in the largest reindeer herding village – Nosok. The new building was built with funds from Norilsk Nickel as part of a large-scale two-billion program to support the indigenous peoples of Taimyr.

The area of the Palace of Culture is 537 square meters. National ornaments of five indigenous ethnic groups of Taimyr were applied to its facade, which made the building an architectural decoration of the village. Inside there is a spacious, bright hall with high ceilings and a panoramic window and an auditorium with 120 seats. The building is equipped with sound, lighting and stage equipment.

“The contrast with the past is striking. I remember very well how we, schoolchildren, practiced in the old club, where it was cold in winter, there was ice on the floor, there was no talk of any repairs. The new building is not inferior to, and in terms of equipment even surpasses, some city cultural institutions in Dudinka. These are completely different opportunities for our children,” Dmitry Koshkarev, a native of the village of Nosok and now the head of the department of the Dudinsky City Folk Art Center, shares his memories.

For the village of Nosok with a population of more than 2,000 people, most of whom lead a nomadic lifestyle and engage in traditional reindeer herding, the new House of Culture is more than a place for leisure.

“This is the cultural heart of the village, which will beat at full strength. We are immensely grateful to Norilsk Nickel for this priceless gift. Our folklore ensembles, children's studios, and family clubs will work here. Now we have decent conditions to preserve and pass on our unique traditions to future generations,” says Evgenia Vango, director of the Center for Folk Art in the rural settlement of Karaul.

On the opening day, a festive concert of local groups took place in the cultural center. In total, the new center will be able to train about 150 children and teenagers of the village. It is planned to name the House of Culture after the famous choreographer Vladimir Sigunei in Taimyr.

At the opening ceremony, the head of Taimyr, Alexey Chlenov, emphasized the systematic approach of Norilsk Nickel to the development of infrastructure in remote areas.

“We are present at a wonderful event – the opening of a rural House of Culture in the village of Nosok, which was built entirely with funds from Norilsk Nickel. But that's only part of the job. The company is already constructing a similar facility in Volochanka, and this year we plan to begin work in Khet. We also open modern first aid stations, which are being built by the company. Today we see that the facility is in great demand – the hall is full, people are standing in the aisles. This is the main indicator. Such projects are not just buildings. If new facilities are built, this means further life for the village. I thank Norilsk Nickel for its active participation and am confident that our cooperation will only expand,” said the head of Taimyr.

The construction of a recreation center in the village of Nosok was a response to a request from residents and part of the company’s systematic five-year program to support the indigenous peoples of Taimyr. Investments in the project amounted to more than 250 million rubles. Similar modern recreation centers have already begun to be built in the villages of Volochanka and Kheta.

“The opening of this recreation center is the fulfillment of the promise that the company made to the residents of Taimyr back in 2020, when the support program was being formed. It was the initiative from the village of Nosok that was one of the first that we supported. Our task is not just to build, but to create real points of attraction that qualitatively change life in remote settlements, where indigenous people make a huge contribution to the development of their land,” said Anfisa Nikiforova, head of the department for work with indigenous peoples of the North of Norilsk Nickel.

The village of Nosok is one of the key reindeer herding centers of Taimyr. Local farms are important suppliers of venison for stores in Norilsk, Dudinka and even Krasnoyarsk. Therefore, the development of social infrastructure is of particular importance here.
