King Carl XVI Gustaf attended on Tuesday from the stands of the Lago di Tesero stadium at the women's classic sprint event, as part of the Winter Olympic Games in Italy, according to Eurosport.ro and Reuters.
The presence of the sovereign, who met his wife at the 1972 edition of the Olympic Games, coincided with the moment when the Swedish team occupied all three places on the podium through athletes Linn Svahn, Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist.
Footage captured at the Val di Fiemme stadium shows the Swedish sovereign greeting the crowd, while women on the podium celebrated the delegation's historic success
The classic sprint event was held over a distance of approximately 1.6 km at the Fabio Canal Stadium in Tesero.
After the race, bronze medalist Maja Dahlqvist said the presence of King Carl XVI Gustaf in the stands added “a bit of pressure” but that the team was proud to achieve this result in front of the sovereign.
This was Sweden's first “full podium” in the women's sprint event in its history at the Winter Olympics. It was also the first time at the 2026 Milano Cortina that a single country occupied all three steps of the podium in one event.
