After Donald Trump's threats against a new bridge between Canada and the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney assured on Tuesday that the situation “will be resolved”, but the White House reiterated its conditions regarding traffic control, notes AFP, taken by Agerpres.

“I spoke with the president this morning. As far as the bridge is concerned, the situation will be resolved,” Mark Carney said, referring to “frank” talks.

Donald Trump reminded her “very clearly” of the requirements during the phone call, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said at a press conference, calling the project “unacceptable” at its current stage.

The American president “considers that the United States should own at least half of the bridge, have joint authority over transit and be associated with the economic benefits it generates,” she indicated.

The bridge, built with Canadian money

On Monday, Donald Trump threatened on his Truth Social network that he will block this project which is almost completed and will connect the American city of Detroit (Michigan) and the Canadian city of Windsor (Ontario).

According to Mark Carney, the conversation allowed to evoke the responsibilities that each of the countries has in this binational project. “I explained to the president that Canada paid for the bridge, first of all, and, secondly, that it is a joint property of the state of Michigan and the Government of Canada,” he emphasized. The prime minister added that the main stake remains the fluidity of cross-border traffic.

Michigan Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin condemned Donald Trump's statements: “With this threat, the president wants to punish the people of Michigan for a trade war that he started” with Canada, she pointed out on X.

Construction began in 2018 at a total cost of 6.4 billion Canadian dollars (about 4.7 billion US dollars), with the opening scheduled for 2026. The bridge will be named after legendary Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe.

Since his return to power, the Republican president has repeatedly made hostile statements against Canada and launched trade and economic attacks, even going so far as to say on several occasions that it should become the 51st US state.

Also, Donald Trump vehemently criticizes Canada's desire to strengthen its economic ties with China.
