Lindsey Vonn's accident, for which the great champion has no one to blame, once again raises a wider issue: artificial snow creates a very different surface than natural snow, changing winter conditions for professionals and amateurs alike.

“In alpine skiing, the difference between a strategic line and a catastrophic injury can be as little as 12 centimeters,” Vonn said in her first reaction.

A week ago, the skier had also been taken by helicopter from the slope, on the way down from Crans-Montana.

“New winters” and “new snow” are not just the problem of performance athletes.
