Folk calendar

Laurentian day

On this day the memory of St. Lawrence, the recluse of Pechersk, Bishop of Turov is celebrated.

In Rus' they said about this date: “The Laurentian day will either be January or March”; “And he will caress you with warmth, and he will beat you with frost.” This clearly characterized the weather of changeable February.

On Laurentius they watched the moon: if it grew, the weather of that day would last the entire first half of the next month; if the date fell on a new moon, this would be the weather for the second half of the month. They predicted the weather by the smoke from the stove (if it flows like a rocker, it will soon be warm), and by the forest (if the trees are noisy, there will be a strong wind), and by the wood in the stove (if it does not burn well, there will be a thaw).

It was believed that on this day witches make creases in dry grass covered with snow. People believed that such creases were akin to damage – they were made to cause harm to the owner. To scare away the witches, it was necessary to stick thistles in the corners of the field – evil spirits are afraid of this plant and will never touch it.

In addition, people who had problems with their eyes prayed to Lawrence. It was believed that this saint could improve vision and cure blindness.
