“After 25 years of progressive decline in relation to our main competitors, it's time to take strong decisions again”the German chancellor said, in front of a group of industrialists gathered in Antwerp, in Belgium, according to Agerpres.

“Only an economically strong Europe can be sovereign” and “it is time to act quickly and decisively”he insisted, on the eve of a summit of the 27 dedicated to EU competitiveness.

“We must deregulate all sectors”added the head of the German government, appreciating that “we need to review the entire European legislation”without contenting ourselves only with modifications “minor”.

The Conservative chancellor also criticized France's proposal to institute “European preference”that is, the obligation for companies that benefit from public funds to procure components manufactured in Europe.

Merz explained that such a measure should be reserved “only to strategic sectors and as a last resort” and not to exclude the partner countries of the EU, declaring himself rather a supporter of “Made with Europe” than al “Made in Europe”.
